Expect loads of energy on your next juice fast!
So this is day 2 of my week long juice fast and I feel GREAT! I literally felt like I had limitless energy today. Starting out this morning, it was as though I had consumed 10 coffees, without the feeling of being wired. I was the "energizer bunny" ... period! I began my day with a tall glass of freshly pressed orange juice and that was it ... the energy kicked in immediately. I went to the gym and put in a serious workout ... still loaded with energy! I followed my workout with 1 tall glass of OJ again and felt amazing! This juice fast is incredible as I have no side effects (detox symptoms) whatsoever! The rest of my day went as follows ...
Juicing for diabetics can be very helpful in controlling blood sugar ...
Many believe that juice - whether freshly pressed or bottled - is unhealthy or bad for diabetics. Research has shown that quite the contrary is true about freshly pressed green plant juices. Juicing for diabetics can actually be very helpful in controlling blood sugar. Also, fresh vegetable juice is loaded with antioxidants, phyto-chemicals and a variety of trace minerals!
Generally, I advocate against adding fruit to green juice if one has a sugar intolerance or sensitivity. Anyone with diabetes should refrain from juicing fruit and simply focus their drinks on leafy greens, low sugar vegetables and sometimes low sugar fruit depending on the person. Although, it is up to the individual to determine what their tolerance level is for fruit given their own personal state of health.
... here I discuss the ins and out of the appropriate juice program for someone with diabetes ...
"Only when the immune system is incapable of destroying these malignant cells will cancer develop." - Dr. Arthur I. Holleb
In the above video I talk about the miraculous healing powers of juice fasting. One may ask, "Why juice at all?" "Why not simply eat the vegetable?" The answer is very simple - these freshly pressed raw juices alkalize the body and provide an abundance of enzymes, vitamins, minerals, phytochemicals, and other nutrients. The approach of drinking freshly pressed juices in order to rid it of any disease is more and more being accepted as a treatment for major diseases. For example, Dr. Max Gerson's treatment for cancer includes drinking one glass of fresh juice each waking hour of the day (see his book A Cancer Therapy). In Holland, Dr. Moerman's vegetarian diet, including these juices, is recognized by the government as a legitimate cancer therapy (see Dr. Moerman's Anti-Cancer Diet by Ruth Jochems). Arthritis has been treated successfully with juices for many decades in Europe (see There Is a Cure For Arthritis by Paavo Airola). Further, Dr. Gerson has found that, when one commits to a strict juice fast where the body is literally flooded with freshly pressed raw plant juices, the immune system becomes so strong that organ transplants are rejected! This is why he refuses to accept as patients anyone with an organ transplant. And if you're worried about all the pulp - as many are - DON'T BE. According to the Gerson Institute, removal of the fiber is necessary when drinking a lot of juice, as in cancer treatment. Put simply, fresh juices provide a convenient way to access the concentrated nutrition available in fruits and vegetables. Fresh juices provide super-nutrition to the body. Fresh foods are the only foods that contain enzymes and do not deplete the body's supply of enzymes. Plentiful enzymes in the body can dissolve the protein coat of viruses, and clean up the mucus that hides cancer cells from the immune system. Fresh juices are a good source of alkaline minerals and help to maintain the flow of bile. Fresh juices can be a good source of amino acids, particularly lysine and tryptophan that are destroyed by heat.
It has been my experience, both personally and based on research, that the only way to truly be in control of your health and to heal yourself and avoid disease is to avoid medication and to submit yourself completely to a raw food regimen consisting of raw fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds. Juicing fruits and vegetables only hastens the healing process as you embark on a program of consuming concentrated forms of the same food in a pre-digested form. As was stated by Thomas Edison, "The doctor of the future will give no medicine, but will interest his patients in the care of the human frame, in diet and in the cause and prevention of disease."
So, make yourself a green juice today; start eating more fruits and vegetables; have a handful of nuts for your next mid-day snack; start here and try any one of my raw food diet plans to support you on your journey.
Swiss Chard leaves make this lovely green juice oh so very lovely ...
I love Swiss Chard leaves in green juice. It is very mild, similar to spinach leaves, but much easier to wash (I find spinach leaves retain a lot of dirt and can be hard to prepare for juicing). What I love about Swiss Chard leaves the most is that kids tend to really enjoy green juice with this sweet tasting herb.
Check out my very simple recipe for Swiss Chard green juice here and the health benefits of this humble green ...
Floral and herbaceous, this herb will knock your socks off!
Today's green juice is utterly beautiful, bright and floral - the lovely cilantro. So very simple and refreshing, you'll have to try this green juice.
Cilantro is normally used as a garnish or herb in cooking. Seldom do people think of it as a means to creating a juice. I put cilantro together with celery, lemon and apple and created instant cilantro-lemonade!

Smoothies can serve as a bridge between juices in a fast ...
When I was fasting on green juice for 3 days, there were moments when I really felt I needed to eat something solid. Other times I was so exhilarated and satiated by the juice, I didn't think much of food. But when I really felt like reaching for something solid, one option available to me was to make a smoothie. Smoothies are amazing because they can serve as a bridge between juices in a fast, when you're craving something more filling. But, because they are blended drinks, they do not interrupt the fast in a significant way.
In the above video, I make a lovely Mango, Raspberry, Date Smoothie, in a base of brazil nut milk which I used as my post-workout drink today. It was so satisfying and delicious, I felt the need to blog about it.
Here's my recipe:
Mango, Raspberry, Date Smoothie
the flesh of 1 ripe mango
2 cups of frozen raspberries
10 to 12 small honey dates, pitted
brazil nut milk as needed (or any nut or seed milk)
*Blend the ingredients above in your high-powered blender, on high for a minute or two or until smooth and creamy. Enjoy immediately or keep refrigerated for a couple of hours before serving.
This drink is truly a meal replacement. I drank a tall cup of this smoothie following my morning workout and I was not hungry until late afternoon!
What makes this smoothie extra special is the brazil nut milk. We generally consume almond milk quite regularly in our home. But, today, I only had a few handfuls of brazil nuts as it was our grocery day. I used these brazil nuts to make a hearty and nutritious nut milk that was the base of my smoothie. In case you are not convinced, here's the down-low on the amazing BRAZIL NUT ...
High Selenium Content. The one thing one must toot about this miraculous nut is it's high selenium content! One nut provides 100% of the daily value for selenium! Wow! Now that's impressive! What is key is that the human body cannot make selenium on its own. It must obtain this vital mineral from food. Absent this mineral, the body really does suffer. Here are just some of the things selenium does for the body:
Selenium helps fight free radicals and boosts the immune system.
It encourages the production of glutathione, the most important antioxidant enzyme that defends our body against free radical damage.
Selenium is essential to thyroid gland function.
Selenium aids in protection against breast and prostate cancer as well as other forms of cancer.
Selenium prevents blood clotting and helps protect from heart diseases.
So, worried about your selenium levels, simply eat 1 or 2 brazil nuts a day and you're in the clear, or enjoy a brazil nut based smoothie today!
Here's how I break my 3 day juice fast ...
In our house we are very accustomed to having a berry, seed and nut based smoothie for breakfast. This is how we start our day. So, it is very natural for me to start my day with a berry smoothie following my 3 day juice fast. As it turns out, however, it is my opinion that a fruit based smoothie or a mono meal of fruit are the best ways to break a liquid fast of any length.
The fact of the matter is that if you jump right into solid food beyond fruits and vegetables you will likely feel terrible. This would be most unfortunate after 3 days of feeling light and exhilarated. The best way to keep the light feeling of a fast would be to start with small meals of fruits and/or vegetables and to keep this going for at least as long as the fast. This approach will allow the body to gently wake up the digestive system. Also, once you have eaten, wait till you feel truly hungry. The goal should not be to stuff your face and make up for lost time. Do not eat according to the clock or because you feel you should be eating more. When breaking a fast, overloading the digestive system causes feelings of apathy, depression or sluggishness. This would be so counterintuitive after what you've accomplished with the juice fast.
Many break juice fasts by having only 1 solid meal per day for a few days and then slowly having 2 or 3 meals. My plan today will be to have a fruit smoothie upon rising and then a raw food meal at lunch and dinner. This will be all that I eat today. I normally eat three raw meals per day plus many snacks. But today I will take it a little lighter for the next few days giving my body the time it needs to wake up to food. I may even incorporate a few raw juices.
I can't over state the importance of planning the food that you will introduce into the system following a juice fast. Decide in advance that you will have a few fruit or vegetable meals and then go at it very intuitively and slowly. Take time. Do not over eat. In time your body will be ready for a full day of solid food.
Today is day 2 of my 3 day raw juice program. I started out by making 2 large mason jars of Broccoli, Cilantro, Celery, Cucumber, Apple, Cabbage, Lemon juice for my husband. I then made straight up OJ for myself. Day 2, funny enough, was more difficult then I thought. I never thought I'd be thinking of food as much as I was. It was especially hard to prepare raw snacks for the kids as I usually eat these along side them. I just made sure to drink juice or almond milk all day long. Today I drank the following:
8:00 a.m. - 8 ounces almond milk with 1 Tbsp ground flaxseed
9:00 a.m. - 12 ounces orange juice
11:00 a.m. - 20 ounces carrot, apple juice
12:00 p.m. - 20 ounces carrot, apple juice
4:00 p.m. - 20 ounces chard, celery, apple, lemon, juice
6:00 p.m. - 30 ounces chard, celery, apple, lemon, broccoli juice
7:30 p.m. - 8 ounces almond milk
11:00 p.m. - 8 ounces almond milk with 1 Tbsp ground flaxseed
That's quite a bit of liquid for 1 day let me tell you. If you ever decide to embark on a juice fast of any sort, make sure to always have a bathroom near by because you'll be using it a lot! And while you crave or at least think of food throughout the entire day, you are actually not hungry with all the beverages you are drinking.
Today I decided not to workout as I wanted to conserve my energy as much as possible. This was a wise decision as I've begun to feel a little low on energy. The juice is energizing, but I'm just not sure if doing heavy weights is smart when the body should be focusing on cleansing and healing. I think for those of you who decide to juice fast, it would be best to simply surrender to complete rest for the period of the fast and not question it. This morning I was feeling disappointed that I was missing out on my workout, but as soon as I embraced a day of rest, it was much easier accepting.
In terms of any detox symptoms, I had a very minor headache at some point of the day that eventually dissipated. Also, throughout the day I've had this chalky-like substance collecting on my teeth. It doesn't taste that good and kinda gets in the way of my enjoying the juice. But all in all, these are very minor symptoms considering what some people experience when they go on a fast.
I'm at the end of day 2 as I write this and very grateful that there is only 1 day left. While I feel accomplished having come this far, I'm really missing food and my heavy workouts. However, I feel very calm, serene and peaceful. There's a "lightness" that comes over you that is hard to explain unless you experience it for yourself. It is very relaxing and enjoyable at times and I can see how juicing can really block a person's cravings and addictions. Basically, juicing quiets the stomach and mind.
So, if you're curious about juice fasting or simply want to know some more about the topic, join me on my last day of my juice fast tomorrow and check out my upcoming videos where I will explain the best way to break a fast.
Today is the first day of my 3 day raw juice program. I've been wanting to do this for some time, but for some reason kept putting it off. I was prompted to get it going when my husband said he would join me in my journey. So together, we are juicing for the next 3 days.
This was what I drank today:
8:00 a.m. - chard, celery, broccoli, lemon, apple, cucumber juice
10:00 a.m. - carrot, apple, lemon juice
11:30 p.m. - homemade almond milk
1:00 p.m. - carrot, apple, lemon juice
2:00 p.m. - raspberry leaf tea
2:30 p.m. - dandelion, celery, lemon, apple, juice
5:30 p.m. - homemade almond milk
7:30 p.m. - dandelion, celery, lemon, apple, tomato, pepper juice
11:00 p.m. - raspberry leaf tea
In total I drank 7, 20 ounce drinks. For the most part I was not really hungry. I only felt true hunger (or cravings for food) around the dinner hour. But once those cravings passed, I had no hunger whatsoever. The juices kept me feeling quite full, although the psychological aspect of simply not eating can get to you if you let it. To cope, I just kept reminding myself that 3 days is very quick and I'll be so grateful when I'm done.
In terms of any withdrawal symptoms or detox, I felt pretty energized all day. At some points I could feel a slight headache coming on, but that quickly dissipated. At the start of my day my energy was very high. As the day progressed, however, I did notice my energy levels dropping somewhat. When this happened I made sure to drink and/or rest. One thing's for certain, if you embark on a juice fasting program, you'll want to rest as much as possible if that's what your body is signalling. I worked out this morning and lifted heavy weights and felt fine throughout the entire experience. I may or may not want to continue with the weights for the next two days; depending on how I feel. I will definitely listen to myself and not push myself.
As I mention in my videos above, the point of this blog is to provide support to anyone who is wanting to embark on a juice program or simply add raw freshly pressed juices to their diet. So, apart from sharing my own experiences, here are the benefits of going on a juice fast:
balanced pH and blood sugar levels
a cleansed and regulated colon
weight loss (fat, not water)
diminished toxin load
strengthened immune system
increased mental clarity
heavy metals cleansing
increased liver function capacity
loss of cravings for sugar and other stimulants
cellular cleansing and rebuilding
radiant, glowing complexion
diminished pains and allergies (some disappear completely)
blood, tissue and organ cleansing
restored liver function capacity
increased energy levels
emotional cleansing and release
and an enhanced sense of joy and lightness is usually experienced
In case you're doubtful, freshly pressed organic fruit and vegetable juices provide your body with everything it needs. Raw plant juice provides natural sugars, salts, enzymes, electrolytes, vitamins, minerals, trace elements and probiotics, all in their appropriate proportions, for the revitalization and rebuilding your body will be doing during a fast. Because juices are pre-digested meals in liquid form they are quickly absorbed into the system. This leaves the body's energy available for the deep cleansing and rebuilding activities of a fast.
Another great benefit to juice fasting is that the colon is washed and thoroughly cleansed by all of the fluids. If you experience sluggish bowels during a fast, one option is to take 1 tablespoon of ground flaxseed in a cup of almond milk prior to bed or upon waking or both. This really gets the bowels moving.
So, join me on this 3 day juice fast as I keep you informed of the ins and outs of juice fasting and try and answer any questions you may have.
This morning I made a lovely Orange, Clementine, Lime juice that was absolutely stellar! My daughter practically fought me for it (not really). Everybody, or at least most people know oranges and orange juice for their high Vitamin C content and their ability to boost the immune system and aid the body in fighting off viruses such as the common cold. However, many do not know that Vitamin C, especially in larger doses, works as an antioxidant. Research shows how this Vitamin delays aging and age related diseases such as arthritis and Parkinson's disease. It also works as an antihistamine combatting allergies, and helps to remove toxins from the body.
In addition to Vitamins, orange juice is chock full of vital minerals. One quart of orange juice contains over 100 milligrams of magnesium! Magnesium is an incredibly important substance. It’s necessary for cellular metabolism of ATP, or the energy your body needs to carry out all of its functions, as well as all your steroidal hormones. As well, OJ boasts modest amounts of potassium. Potassium works by getting sugar into the cell, which regulates cellular metabolism and makes use of that sugar by using it as fuel.
In addition to these minerals, raw orange juice has significant amounts of folate, B-6, thiamin, choline, vitamin A and calcium. Many are surprised to hear that 1 cup of freshly pressed orange juice has 27 mg of calcium!
Green Juice - A Mineral Powerhouse
There is a great advantage to obtaining calcium through juicing - raw plant juices and especially those made from leafy greens, are alkaline drinks as opposed to meats and dairy products which are highly acidic. Research has shown how calcium risks being excreted from the body when its source is acidic in nature. Conversely, freshly prepared plant juices rich in calcium are great because the non-acidic environment of the vegetable and fruit is ideal to reduce the risk of calcium excretion from the body and to promote better absorption.
But it's important to look not just at calcium but also at the following additional nutrients and chemical elements that contribute to bone building and overall bone health:
Magnesium promotes the transport of calcium from and to the bones and helps the bio-chemistry of calcium. Calcium, phosphorous and magnesium work together in this endeavour. Leafy green vegetables are loaded with magnesium!
Phosphorus promotes building of bones and other tissue growth. Parsley and other leafy greens are abundant in this mineral.
Copper regulates some aspects of the bio-chemistry of the bones. Foods rich in copper are nuts, cocoa and whole grains.
Zinc is a chemical element that promotes the process of protein synthesis in the bones. Good vegan plant sources of zinc are whole grains, beans, and nuts.
Iron promotes bone strength. This nutrient is abundant in cruciferous vegetables, carrots, parsley, pineapple and blackberries.
Silicon increases the strength of bones and teeth. Silicon can be found in cucumbers, asparagus, cabbage and dandelion greens.
Manganese promotes the building of cartilage and other types of connective tissues. This nutrient is found in pumpkin seeds, flax and sesame seeds, cruciferous vegetables, apples, pears, and oranges.
Potassium promotes the health of the bones by stabilizing the electrolytes in the body. Potassium vegetable and fruit sources are bananas, avocados, raisins, cocoa, dried apricots, cantaloupe, celery, carrots, potatoes, and tomatoes.
One can easily appreciate, by looking over the minerals listed above and their sources, how achieving a broad spectrum of minerals is totally achievable on a vegan and even raw vegan lifestyle. One simply needs to be vigilant and knowledgeable and needs to make sure that they are taking in a variety of fruits, vegetables, leafy greens and nuts and seeds.
So, make yourself a freshly pressed juice today and load your body with high quality Vitamins and minerals!
